Walter Stuempfig, Jr. (1914-1970) was born in Germantown, Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) with Henry McCarter, Daniel Garber, and Francis Speight. He also taught at PAFA from 1948-70. At his first solo exhibition in New York in 1943 purchasers included New York’s Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.
His work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., the Philadelphia Museum of Art and PAFA.
“Blue Caps”, 1965.
Oil on canvas, 19 x 14 inches, in its original frame. This painting was exhibited at the Richard K. Larcada Gallery in Manhattan in 1965 (exhibition catalogue included).
