Glenn Stuart Pearce
Glenn Stuart Pearce (1909-1986) studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) and with Arthur B. Carles. He was a WPA artist in the 1930s and painted many scenes of industrial and urban Philadelphia. He lived in West Philadelphia and later in Elkins Park and rarely sold his work. Two of his paintings are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Pearce’s painting evolved and changed over time; this painting of the Town Hall in Germantown, seen leaning at an angle and defying traditional perspective, represents a familiarity with the aims of the German Expressionists and a desire to not simply record a scene but to represent how the artist feels about it.
